Allspice is actually the dried, unripened berry of the plant Pimenta dioica.
It is also known as Jamaica pepper.
This very aromatic spice is widely used in a variety of foods and is very popular in pickling.
The name comes from the fact that it seems to be a cross of a great many different kinds of spices, including cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and even pepper.
